Privacy policy

Effective date: 20 October 2026. Applies to Keyword Lantern – Keyword Highlighter, the browser extension for Chrome and Firefox.

In short: Keyword Lantern does not collect, transmit, sell or share any personal data. Your keyword lists and settings are stored only in your browser and never leave your device, and the extension makes no network requests at all.

Who we are

Keyword Lantern (the "extension") is published by Omni, a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) of Ryan Koning, Dennenweg 34, 9674 JW Winschoten, the Netherlands ("we", "us"). Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number 42088998, VAT number NL005486458B92. This policy explains what the extension does with your information.

What the extension can access

At install it asks for no access to the sites you visit. It uses three permissions, and one optional one that is off until you turn a feature on:

PermissionWhy
activeTab To read and highlight the page you are looking at, and only after you click the toolbar icon or press the keyboard shortcut. Your browser grants it for that one tab. It gives no access to your other tabs.
scripting To put the highlighting script and the highlight colours into the page you chose to highlight, or into pages on sites you explicitly enabled for automatic highlighting.
storage To save your keyword lists and settings locally in the browser (storage.local). Nothing is synced to an account and nothing is sent anywhere.
Host access (optional, off by default) Only requested at the moment you turn on automatic highlighting, for the sites you name, or for all sites if you choose that. It is used for nothing but highlighting those pages as they load, and it is handed back when you turn the feature off.

What the extension does with a page

While it is highlighting, the extension reads the text of the page to find the words and phrases in the lists you switched on. It counts the matches and draws the highlights on top of the text; it does not change the page, and input fields and editors are left alone. All of this happens inside your browser, on your device. No page text, no address and no match is sent to us or to anyone else.

What the extension stores, and where

DataWhere it is storedPurpose
Your lists: their names, the words and phrases in them, their colours, their matching options, and which lists are switched on In the extension's own local storage in your browser (storage.local), under a single key So your lists are there the next time you open it.
The sites you enabled for automatic highlighting The same local storage So the extension knows which pages to highlight without being asked.
A backup copy of stored data that a new version cannot read The same local storage, under a dated backup key So an update can never silently lose your lists. Nothing is deleted to make room for it.

We cannot see any of this. There is no account to attach it to and no server to send it to: it is local browser storage, like a bookmark.

A file you create with Export is saved where you choose, by you. It holds your lists and nothing else, and what happens to it afterwards is in your hands.

What the extension does not do

Automatic highlighting

By default the extension does nothing until you click it. If you would rather it highlighted certain sites by itself, you turn that on in the settings and name the sites, or choose all sites. Your browser then asks you for access to those sites, at that moment and in its own words. You can withdraw it at any time, in the extension's settings or in your browser's extension settings, and switching the feature off hands the access back.

Firefox

In Firefox, Keyword Lantern declares that it collects no data, which is why its Add-ons listing says so.

Keeping and deleting data

Security

The extension runs with the smallest set of permissions that will do the job, and asks for access to a site only when you ask it for the feature that needs it. Because it never transmits anything, there is no copy of your data on our side to protect or to leak.

Children

The extension is a general reading tool. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If the extension's data handling ever changes, this page and its effective date will be updated before that version is published, with a note below. A change that needed a new permission would be approved by you in your browser as well.
