Keyword Lantern – keyword highlighter for Chrome and Firefox

A keyword highlighter Chrome extension, and a Firefox add-on, for lists of your own: keep your words and phrases and see them on any web page in the colours you chose, each with a count of how often it turns up. For a job hunt, an ingredient list, a long piece of documentation — anything you read looking for something particular.

What it does

You bring the words. It finds them, counts them, colours them and walks you from one to the next.

  • A colour per keyword

Every word is highlighted in the colour you give it, so you can tell at a glance which of your terms a page is talking about.

  • A counter, and a way through

Each keyword carries the number of times it appears, with buttons that jump to the next match and the previous one.

  • Several lists at once

One list for a job search and another for the red flags, switched on or off with a single click.

  • Paste the whole list

One word per line, or separated by commas. No adding them one at a time.

  • Matching the way you mean it

Per list: whole words only, match case, and ignore accents so that café finds cafe. Phrases are found across line breaks and formatting too.

  • Keeps up with the page

Pages that load more as you scroll are rescanned, so the counts stay right instead of going stale.

  • Patterns, for the awkward cases

Anything a word list cannot say, a regular expression can: /pattern/ in place of a word.

  • Your lists travel

Import and export them as JSON, or as a plain text file with one word per line.

  • Click, shortcut, or automatic

Alt+Shift+K does what clicking the icon does, and automatic highlighting can be turned on for the sites you choose.

Good to know

Three things worth knowing before you install, rather than after.

  • It draws on top, it does not rewrite

Highlights are painted over the text instead of changing the page, so sites, forms and text editors keep working exactly as they did. Input fields and editors are never touched.

  • Your lists are safe across updates

An update migrates them carefully, and data it cannot read is kept as a backup rather than thrown away. Export a copy whenever you like.

  • Where it cannot run

Ordinary web pages, yes. Browsers allow no extension on their own pages — settings, the extension stores — or inside the built-in PDF viewer.

Help and support

A page where nothing lights up, a word that is matched when it should not be, or a list you cannot get out of an older extension? Write to hello@askomni.app with the address of the page and the words you were looking for; you will get an answer from the person who wrote it.

Private by design

It reads a page to highlight it, and that is the end of it. Nothing is sent anywhere, because there is nowhere for it to go.

  • It asks for nothing at install

No access to your sites is requested when you add it. Your browser hands it one tab, and only after you click the icon or press the shortcut.

  • No network requests

None at all: no analytics, no advertising, no affiliate links and no code loaded from anywhere. Everything it runs is in the package you installed.

  • No account, no limits

Nothing to sign up for and nothing to log in to, and no cap on how many words a list may hold. It is free, with no paid tier.

  • Your lists stay in your browser

They live in the extension's own local storage, not in an account, and uninstalling takes them with it. A backup you export is yours alone.

Automatic highlighting is the one thing that needs more than a tab. Turn it on for the sites you name, or for all of them, and your browser asks you for that permission at the moment you ask for the feature. Switching it off hands the permission back.
