Privacy policy
In short: the add-on works only inside the document you use it in. It sends nothing to us or to anyone else, has no servers, no analytics and no accounts, and stores its few notes inside your document.
Who we are
Captions & Cross Reference (the "add-on") is published by Omni, a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) of Ryan Koning, Dennenweg 34, 9674 JW Winschoten, the Netherlands ("we", "us"). Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number 42088998, VAT number NL005486458B92. This policy explains what the add-on does with your information.
What the add-on can access
When you install the add-on, Google asks you to allow two permissions:
| Permission (as Google shows it) | Technical scope | Why |
|---|---|---|
| View and manage documents that this application has been installed in | https://www.googleapis.com/auth/documents.currentonly |
To read and update captions, references and lists in the document you are using it in. It cannot open your other files. |
| Display and run third-party web content in prompts and sidebars inside Google applications | https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.container.ui |
To show the add-on's sidebar and messages inside Google Docs. |
The add-on does not ask for, and cannot get, access to your other documents, your Google Drive, your email address, your contacts or any other Google service.
What the add-on does with your document
While you use it, the add-on reads the open document's text, heading styles, links and bookmarks. It uses them to find captions, headings and references. When you click Insert or Update all, it changes only:
- caption numbers;
- the text and links of the references it manages;
- bookmarks;
- lists of figures that you inserted.
All of this happens inside Google's systems, in Google Apps Script. Your document content is never sent to us or to any third party.
What the add-on stores, and where
| Data | Where it is stored | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Links, bookmarks and named ranges for captions, references and lists | In your document, as part of its content | They make captions and references work. |
| Settings (e.g. chapter numbering on or off, label text) | Document properties: a small private store Google keeps with the document, readable only by this add-on | Remembering your choices for this document. |
| Bookmark IDs and the last known text and number of headings you referenced | Document properties | Repairing references after you rename, move or cut-and-paste content. |
We (the developer) cannot see any of this data. It stays with your document under your Google account's protection.
What the add-on does not do
- It does not send, sell, rent or share your data with anyone.
- It does not use servers, cookies, analytics, tracking pixels, advertising or crash reporting.
- It does not use your data to train or improve any machine-learning or AI model.
- No human, including us, reads your documents.
- It does not access any file other than the open document.
Google API Services User Data Policy
Captions & Cross Reference's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. The use of information received from Google Workspace APIs will adhere to the Google Workspace API User Data and Developer Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Keeping and deleting data
- Your document holds it all. The add-on's data is kept as long as the document exists. Deleting the document deletes it.
- Stored notes and settings. To remove them from one document, open the add-on's settings (the sliders icon) and click Forget stored data.
- Captions, references and lists. These are ordinary text and links in your document; edit or delete them like any other text.
- Uninstalling. Go to Extensions → Add-ons → Manage add-ons in Google Docs. This stops the add-on from running. It does not change your documents.
- Revoking access. You can also revoke the permissions at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Security
The add-on runs entirely inside Google Apps Script with the minimum permissions listed above. Because it never transmits data, there is no developer-side copy of your data to protect or to leak.
Children
The add-on is a general productivity tool. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the add-on's data handling ever changes, we will update this page and its effective date before the change is released. If a change would ever require new permissions, Google will ask you to approve them again.
- 19 October 2026: first version.
